Linda's Diary

Past:
I have the best life in the world; my man is bringing in the big bucks and our kids doing the right thing. Biff is playing football on a scholarship and happy is working his butt off. We have a really nice Chevy and my family is super happy.  It makes me so happy to see my family running around throwing the football and being happy. Willy loves his life and he’s getting the recognition that he needs. He works so hard all the time I just hope my kids can follow in his footsteps. He’s a great man and the love of my life.

Present:
I feel my life is falling apart right in front of my eyes. Will isn’t making any money anymore and he’s also losing his mind. On most night its super hard to get him to bed, the kids try to help but it just makes it all worse. Biff doesn’t respect will anymore and only cares about me. Biff isn’t working and keeps talking about how he hates Brooklyn. He just wants to move away and work out in the country. Happy is working and he won’t get moved up until the manager dies. I’m just so worries about will health; he just doesn’t seem to be happy anymore. He drove his car into the river and got lucky the river was low because he could have died. I don’t know what I would have done if he died, my life would be over too. L

The lottery

The story “lottery” by Shirley Jackson is a perfect example of the tribal nature of a small community because this small town has this lottery that comes around once a year. But this isn’t like any out lottery; this is one you do not want to win. The result of this lottery is stoned to death no matter what. There are many little things that lead up to the stoning. For example when the kids of the town are gathering up rock getting ready to pick one up and throw it. The black box could be a sign of death because the color black is for death. The black dot on the paper could be a sign for death also because its just a black dot which could represent the black the person is going to see once they get hit with the stones. The stoning shows that this small community just goes along with what the past people put into place. Many people during the story brought up that other towns have already quit the lottery and Mr. Adams even called that town “ a bunch of young fools”. Its shows that these older people are just stuck in the past and don’t want move on. Some people from that town has even moved away to get away from the lottery.

Boy

Your mother is always right: always right. When you wake up, you will make your bed and your room will be spotless. I understand dad. You will eat breakfast every morning and you will cook it also. After that you will finish stacking the wood. You will treat everyone with respect and will never set a hand on a female. I understand dad. You will never touch any drugs and you are allowed to drink when you are 21.You will be grateful for everything that is given to you and will not be a brat. You will listen to everything I say. Make sure you understand your actions in life are always a reflection of our last name. You got this. I believe in you.

Dialogue

The drunken middle brother of three came speeding in the driveway, slamming on the breaks. He flung open the door screaming up a storm. The youngest brother and his mother are sitting on the couch watching a movie.
The mother jumped up worried and said what in the heck are you doing?
The middle one yelled back I hate that little shit!
The young one yelled back what in the heck did I do now?
He said you called the cops?
Nope I didn’t!
Well then why are they here?
Because you are wasted and driving your car!
The mother started yelling and crying at the middle brother for driving drunk.
The cops started knocking at the door. Which the young brother answered.
The cops said I’m looking for the owner of this black car that’s parked in the driveway.
The middle brother stumbled to the door and said I own that car is there a problem?
The cop replied yes you are under arrest for driving under the influence.
The mother screamed with tears running down her face. You can’t take my son!
The cop replied that we have too! He hit a car and took off! The cops left with the middle son and he was charge with hit and run!
The youngest brother said mom it’s probably better that he’s with them because he was going to kill himself or someone else.
The mother replied you’re probably right.
