The story
“lottery” by Shirley Jackson is a perfect example of the tribal nature of a
small community because this small town has this lottery that comes around once
a year. But this isn’t like any out lottery; this is one you do not want to
win. The result of this lottery is stoned to death no matter what. There are
many little things that lead up to the stoning. For example when the kids of
the town are gathering up rock getting ready to pick one up and throw it. The
black box could be a sign of death because the color black is for death. The
black dot on the paper could be a sign for death also because its just a black
dot which could represent the black the person is going to see once they get
hit with the stones. The stoning shows that this small community just goes
along with what the past people put into place. Many people during the story
brought up that other towns have already quit the lottery and Mr. Adams even
called that town “ a bunch of young fools”. Its shows that these older people
are just stuck in the past and don’t want move on. Some people from that town
has even moved away to get away from the lottery.
This particular entry doesn't go beyond work with the short story. The instructions are asking that you contribute additional examples/illustrations BEYOND the text.
